Chair of Civil Law
One of the largest chairs of WPiA UW
We conduct research and teaching in substantive civil law: from the general part, through property law and obligations, to family and succession law. We combine dogmatic reflection with analysis of jurisprudence, business practice and legislative change.
ius civile
Civil law regulates pecuniary and non-pecuniary relations between formally equal parties — natural persons, legal persons and certain organisational units.
It is not only the foundation of the private-law order of the Republic of Poland, but also a dynamic field of research conducted at the Chair of Civil Law on the institutions within its scope, their development in doctrine and jurisprudence, and the importance of civil law for contemporary commerce.
Three pillars

Teaching
We teach the key areas of civil law: the general part, property law, the law of obligations, family and succession law. In our work with students we combine a systematic understanding of civil-law institutions with analysis of jurisprudence and learning to solve practical problems.

Research
Our research covers the most important institutions of private law and their development in doctrine and jurisprudence. Chair members are authors of commentaries, monographs, textbooks and scholarly articles. They also actively participate in research projects, including international ones.

Practice
The Chair's expert work includes drafting legal opinions and expert reports, analysing legislative issues and participating in codification work. In this way the Chair's scholarly output is applied to solving complex problems of contemporary civil law.

The Chair is led by prof. dr hab. Maciej Kaliński.
Under the leadership of Prof. Maciej Kaliński, the Chair of Civil Law develops research on key institutions of civil law and their significance for contemporary commerce. The Chair brings together professors, habilitated doctors, assistant professors and doctoral candidates from the Doctoral School of Social Sciences (SDNS) working with them, conducting research on the general part of civil law, property law, obligations, and family and succession law. The scientific staff combines research, teaching and expert work, creating one of the most important civil-law environments in Poland.
